Academic achievement After graduating from Hwa Chong Junior College, George Chong went on to the National University of Singapore to obtain his Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Chemistry. His passion is diversified, and it range from writing, teaching and imparting knowledge to participation in multi discipline endurance sport event. He is a firm believer that Chemistry is the central science and he went on to obtain his Masters in Science (Sports Science) where he had a chance to integrate his Chemistry and Biochemistry knowledge to the field of exercise physiology and biomechanics. Career achievement George has been teaching Chemistry for 17 years, He believes that to be a good teacher, one has to be able to explain and enthuse students of different abilities. His is humbled to have had the opportunity to teach students from different walks of life, ranging from normal technical students in Zhenghua Secondary to high ability prodigies in Hwa Chong Junior College and NUS High School of Math and Science. George has just resigned from ACS Independent with effect from end 2012 as a Senior IB Chemistry teacher. Currently, he and his wife have set up a tuition place by the name of “Eureka Education” at Balmoral Plaza to focus on Secondary IP and ‘O’ level, IB and JC Chemistry. George started his teaching career in his Alma Mata, Hwa Chong Junior College in 1995. Under the leadership of Mdm Leong Fan Chin, George was given the opportunity to teach both Chemistry and Physical Education. In year 2000, George was promoted to head a department in Zhenghua secondary, and it was there where he learnt the pedagogical skills to teach the lower ability children and also the people skills to manage 3 departments. In both NUS High (2003 to 2004) and ACS Independent (2005 to 2012), George was fortunate to join the group of pioneer teachers to design and implement the curriculum for both the Advanced placement and International Baccalaureate programme. In the seven years in ACS Independent as senior teacher in IB chemistry, George has started many initiatives which benefited the students. The IB Ten year series, The IA manual (which is not no longer issued to students) and the notes for Higher Level chemistry are examples. To date, the materials have been adopted and improved upon by the current teachers. George also had the privilege of being sent to several IB conferences, and he is now a Category 3 IB teacher. Outside work involvement As a hobby, George is an avid endurance sport enthusiast. He has completed 3 Ironman races, numerous triathlons, duathlons and ultramarathons. After a close shave bicycle accident in 2005, he is now focusing only on marathons and ultramarathons. His best showing is when he emerged 12th position in the 2010 North Face 50 km off road ultramarathon. (6 hrs 09 mins) and 23rd position in the 2012 North Face 100 km trail race (14.15 hrs). To keep fit amidst his busy schedule shuttling between school teaching and home tuition, he now runs to and from school to home. The morning jog to school relaxes his mind and gives him the occasional inspiration about pedagogy. He enjoys his everyday routine to the fullest and is committed to helping students as long as they are keen to learn.

The Li Ka Shing Library is the center for the academic and professional knowledge resources and services that support the research and learning needs of the SMU community. Come visit us in our wonderful space or use our digital library, SMU PYXIS. Centrally located on the City Campus, the library building offers a range of work spaces - including open areas for individual or collaborative use, quiet individual carrels, book-able project rooms for 4-6 students equipped with LCD panels and a cafe within the library for study breaks. The entry level features a collaborative study area and a collection of lifestyle reading materials. The entire building is wireless and designed for your laptop use, and there are also wired ports and a limited number of dedicated computers, some with special use financial software. A library classroom for hands on training and other faculty research services, such as Centre for Academic Computing and Centre for Teaching and Learning are also in the building. Our emphasis is on access and dissemination, service and cooperation rather than on building large collections. The library staff includes individuals with diverse backgrounds. Library staff have specialized degrees in library and information science from the poly to masters level and also degrees in subject areas key to SMU such as accounting, economics, law and social sciences. They bring experience from other institutions of higher learning both inside and outside of Singapore, from multinational corporations, research institutes, NGOs and government agencies. They all have two things in common: intellectual curiosity and their commitment to provide excellent customer focused -services for the SMU community.
