The Official Physical Education & Sports Science Social Network
As one of 12 academic groups of the National Institute of Education, we equip trainee teachers with diploma, graduate and post-graduate qualifications to teach Physical Education (PE) in schools in Singapore. Trainees are exposed holistically to the art and science of PE.
We imbue trainees with knowledge, attitudes and values in sport science, sport studies and sport pedagogy that foster life-long enquiry and learning. PESS trainees are well-prepared starters at the end of their training. They are eager to make a significant contribution to teaching PE in schools. Many return to PESS to pursue Master and PhD studies. A few stay on to become staff of PESS.
Our gifted professors and educators are a local and international mix of expertise. Staff is committed to facilitating the best training available using state of the art facilities, laboratories, IT- enabled technologies and evidence-based pedagogies. The PESS professor and educator use trainee-centred and evidence-based approaches to allow trainees to develop personally, academically and professionally. They work smart, play hard, and are empathetic and approachable. Many are leaders in their fields of expertise in Singapore and the region.
PESS is seriously active in research. A current joint-project with the Ministry of Education is Teaching and Learning in Physical Education: Promoting Lifelong Physical Activity. For NIE and MOE, this is the highest funded project since 2001 as of July 2006. Sport science and sport studies research features prominently. PESS staff are also much sought after speakers for international conferences and trainers for local and regional consultancy projects.
PESS supports innovation and enterprise. HealthTrek Information Tracking SystemPatent (HITS) and Sports Science in Sporting SuccessTrademark (SSSS) are two examples of PESS-pioneered products that were developed with industry and NIE-funding. Some publications that are essential reading in academia and in teaching are authored by PESS staff.
Trainees in PESS are a vibrant and exuberant lot. With their infectious enthusiasm, a strong sense of identity and can-do spirit, they never fail to enliven many a lecture or activity class. They make fast friends and are quick to volunteer for NIE-community-based projects. PESS trainees stand up and can be counted when it matters. They are fully engaged in PESS and NIE. They make us proud.
That is why we are refreshingly different.
